40 Days of Fixing Your Eyes on Jesus
Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus,
the author and perfecter of our faith. Who, for the joy set before him, endured the cross,
scorning its shame, and is not seated at the right hand of the throne of God
Hebrews 12:2
This Bible reading plan gives your forty days of fixing your eyes on Jesus, forty days to watch what he does, watch how he lives, and watch how he dies. With Jesus as the focal point, you'll be able to join his disciples and follow him through the Galilean countryside, see him rejected in his hometown, rejected by religious leaders, and welcomed by prostitutes, tax collectors and children. You'll see him feed and preach and teach and heal men, women, and children. You'll see him walk on water and calm the storm. You'll join Jesus in Jerusalem for the days of his passion. And, as you fix your eyes on Jesus, you'll come face-to-face with both the suffering servant and the King of kings.
What you need
1. Bible
2. Journal
3. Pen
What you do
1. Pray - Open your Bible and pray something as simple as, "God, open my heart to hear your voice. Please speak to me as I read the Bible."
2. Read - Read the passage for the day. Some days there are more that one passage as the story is repeated in several places. You can read one of the selections or more. It's up to you.
3. Write - In your journal write the date and the passage you read and answer three questions:
- What do I learn about Jesus in this story?
- What does it have to do with me?
- What am I going to do about it?
4. Reflect - Look back at what you wrote and think about it. Pray as you're thinking. Below where you answered the questions, write your reflections and possibly a prayer. When you do this, you're taking God's work into your heart, your mind, your life. You're reading it, writing it, praying it. By actively engaging in what you're reading, you'll be more likely to actually apply it to your life.
5. Pray - Since you've been praying as you were writing, this is really just a prayer to close out your Bible reading time. It can be as simple as, "Lord, thank you for your Word. Thank you for speaking to me. Help me to remember your Word through the day and live it out. In Jesus' name, amen."
