Please pray - possibility of a moratorium ...
... on Ukrainian adoptions. On June 2nd, the Ukrainian Parliament, or Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, will gather to determine whether or not a moratorium on the adoption of Ukrainian children by internationals should be instituted.
That's right - a complete moratorium. So much hearsay swirls around this bill, so I am not going to speculate on the "whys" and "what ifs," but simply ask you to pray.
If you'd like to read a bit more, here are a few places you can visit:
An interview with Liudmila Semenovna, the head of the State Department for Adoption and Protection of Children's Rights in Ukraine, in which she highlights the pressure the Adoption Department is currently experiencing.
A commentary from Pretre's Adoption Blog in which a father who recently adopted two boys from Ukraine gives his perspective on this bill.
And an official explanation on the recommendation for a moratorium here.
We truly understand the desire of the Ukrainian government to regulate adoptions in a way that truly protects the children and we understand that there has been misconduct on the part of a small number of adoptive parents. However, we are hoping and praying for the Verkhovna Rada to have godly wisdom to begin a gradual examination of the adoption process that will allow parents who are currently working toward adoption to continue without interruption AND to bring more stringent regulations that will prevent corruption, allow the Ukrainian government to track the children who are adopted, and ultimately place more children in loving homes - whether Ukrainian, Italian, American, or otherwise.
Would you please join our family in prayer that this bill will be rejected on Tuesday and that every roadblock will be moved out of the way enabling us to travel this summer to bring home Katya?
