I'm Asking You to Help Kate Help William

Kate's stepped up the plate big-time to care for a young man she doesn't know.  Yesterday this young man faced death.  Today he has a shot at life because of Kate.

Kate isn't just an unknown to me.  She is one of "my girls."  When we lived in Charlottesville, Kate hung out with our family, baby-sat our kids, played drums for our church.  She so desperately wanted to get to Africa to serve orphans that she has done some things that seem pretty crazy.

Kate's a risk-taker, she's young, and she loves Jesus.

Yesterday, on the way home from teaching, she saw a young man, naked, malnourished, and disoriented. She didn't drive by.  She didn't call 911, as if that were a possibility in Uganda.  What Kate did do ... is stop.

  • She fed him her rice and beans.
  • She gave clothed him with some shorts that she had.
  • She took him to the hospital.

After two-and-a-half hours of trying to get care for this nameless, voiceless young man at the hospital, Kate said to the doctor,

"Here are this boy's options.  He can receive medical treatment from you or he can go back on the streets and die.  It's up to you whether he lives or dies."

Then God did something amazing.  He opened a window, an opportunity that gives such a beautiful glimpse of the heart of of God.

"Fine," the doctor said.  "Give him a name."

Without thinking, Kate gave this young man a name.

"William."

This young man has a name, a new name.

  • No longer forsaken.
  • No longer abandoned.
  • No longer nameless.

This young man has a name, and it's a good one.  William means desire protection. But, somehow I doubt that Kate knew this when "William" bubbled out through her lips.  But this young man has a deep, deep need for protection.  And Kate's giving it to him.

When Kate stopped on the road, and fed him, and clothed him, and took him to the hospital, she stepped in to protect him.  She didn't think long and hard about it.  She just did it.

With a new name and the beginning of medical records, William is in the hospital, and Kate has a new responsibility.

The nurses will care for William on these conditions ...

  • Kate provides food
  • Kate provides clothing
  • Kate provides linens
  • Kate provides medicine

Kate estimates that caring for William will cost about $5.00 each day.  Kate has $5.00 for today, and probably $5.00 for a few more days.  But she doesn't have much more than that.  Kate is the hands and feet caring for William, but she needs us to step up and sponsor William's care.  I'm asking you to help Kate help William.
